ML engineering is the most established AI role on the remote market, which makes it both the safest and the most crowded. The label has been around long enough that most teams know what they mean by it — but the work inside that label still varies wildly between companies.

Three jobs are hiding in the same keyword

"ML Engineer" covers three quite different jobs, and the distinction matters because it determines whether you'll spend your days on training code, production systems, or somewhere in the narrow band between them.

Applied ML engineer. Trains and tunes models for a specific product — recommendation, ranking, search, fraud, forecasting. Day to day: feature engineering, experiment tracking, offline evaluation, a lot of notebooks feeding into a small amount of production code. Moderate systems depth, high product focus. Common and well understood.

MLOps / production ML engineer. Owns the path from trained model to production system. Day to day: model serving, monitoring, drift detection, rollbacks, feature stores, inference infrastructure. High systems depth, lower product focus. Well-paid because fewer engineers have shipped ML in production at scale.

Research-adjacent engineer. Closer to the paper side — experimentation infrastructure, training pipelines, ablations, reproducible research. Day to day: sprawling experimental codebases, distributed training jobs, and helping researchers turn prototypes into something usable. Narrow scope, very deep stack, rare.

Four employer types cover most of the market

ML engineering roles cluster by how central ML is to what the company actually ships.

ML-native product companies. Companies where the product is the model — search ranking, recommendation, speech, vision, forecasting. ML engineers here own their models end-to-end. Engineering cultures tend to be serious, interviews tend to be hard, and pay tracks accordingly.

Recommendation, ranking, and feed companies. E-commerce, social, content, marketplaces — any company whose product feels "smart" because a model is choosing what you see. Most applied ML jobs on the remote market are variations of this, and the engineers who do it well are in constant demand.

MLOps and ML infrastructure companies. Companies whose product is the platform other ML teams build on — experiment tracking, feature stores, serving layers, model monitoring. The engineers here are often the best-paid ML engineers on the market because they're solving problems their own customers already tried to solve themselves.

Research labs and foundation model shops. A smaller market, but a distinct one. The work is heavier on experimentation and distributed training, and the lines between engineering and research are blurrier. These roles are competitive and tend not to show up on general job boards.

What the stack actually looks like

Very few listings spell out the full stack you'll need. What "ML Engineer" usually implies in practice: Python at a comfortable working level; one of the major training frameworks (PyTorch is the default, TensorFlow still around in older codebases); the data tooling the team uses (usually a warehouse plus pandas, increasingly Polars or DuckDB); experiment tracking (MLflow, Weights & Biases, or something internal); and, for production roles, a serving and monitoring layer the team has committed to.

Six things worth checking before you apply

These hold up better than any bullet list of frameworks, and they don't go stale when the library of the month changes.

  1. Which part of the ML lifecycle the role actually covers. A good listing tells you: "train and deploy ranking models," "build and maintain the feature store," "own inference infrastructure for a model family." A weaker one says "ML engineer wanted" and leaves you to guess.
  2. Whether the team has a production ML story, or just a training one. Mentions of monitoring, drift, rollback, A/B testing at the model level, or inference SLAs are all signals of a team that actually ships. Their absence usually means "we train models and then try to get them into production, and it's hard."
  3. How decisions about models are actually made. Listings that describe an experiment framework, shared eval harnesses, or a model review process are coming from teams that treat ML as engineering. Listings that don't usually mean individual ML engineers are improvising.
  4. Remote-work maturity. Good remote teams put their async habits in writing: how decisions are documented, how review travels across timezones, how onboarding runs without a full-team call. ML teams historically lag here, which makes the good ones stand out.
  5. Product scope you can say out loud. If you can't describe in one sentence which model you'd be working on and what it's for, the team probably hasn't agreed on it either. Vague ML roles produce vague outcomes.
  6. How the hiring process itself reads. A take-home focused on ML judgement rather than leetcode, a paid trial day, or structured pairing — these come from teams that value your time. Multi-stage algorithmic interviews that look like SWE auditions are usually a sign the team hasn't figured out how to hire ML engineers specifically.

The bottleneck is different at every level

Remote ML hiring is crowded at the junior-to-mid end and very competitive at senior.

Junior is crowded because the entry point looks welcoming — a course, a Kaggle notebook, a transformer tutorial. What thins the field is evidence you've taken a model from an experiment to something someone else actually uses. A small public project with real data, an evaluation strategy, and a reproducible pipeline is worth more than ten Kaggle medals. Teams working across timezones can tell the difference very quickly.

At senior level, the modelling bar barely moves between mid and senior. What changes is systems judgement: knowing when a simpler model is enough, knowing when the problem is actually a data problem, knowing when to ship and when to go back and fix an eval before shipping. That kind of judgement rarely turns up on a CV. It shows up in how someone describes the last model they shipped and what they'd do differently now.

What the hiring process usually looks like

Length varies — from three weeks at a smaller shop to two months at an ML-native company. The stages themselves don't move much: (1) application — tailored CV, short intro, links to real work; (2) screen — written intake or a 20–30 minute call; (3) technical — ML take-home, paired modelling exercise, or systems-oriented pairing; (4) final round — ML systems design, team fit, written or verbal deep-dive; (5) offer — comp, references, start date.

Red flags and green flags

Red flags — step carefully or pass:

  • A listing that asks for "ML engineer" but reads entirely like a data scientist role.
  • Companies claiming to "do AI" with no public description of a single model they've actually shipped.
  • Tech stack lists that pile on every framework in the same paragraph with no reason.
  • Unpaid take-homes longer than a few hours, particularly ones that would produce something shippable.
  • Salary bands missing entirely, or a range so wide it carries no information.

Green flags — strong signal of a healthy team:

  • A clear description of which model the role owns and what it's for.
  • Public engineering writing about how the team evaluates, ships, or monitors models.
  • A named tech lead or research lead with a link to their public work.
  • A hiring process laid out step by step with time estimates at each stage.
  • Transparent compensation and location policy, ideally linked from a public handbook.

What's the difference between an ML engineer and a data scientist? ML engineers ship models into production systems. Data scientists usually focus on analysis, experimentation, and insight. There's overlap — some companies use the labels interchangeably — but the core distinction is whether the role is measured by engineering impact (a model running in production, monitored, improving) or by analytical impact (a decision made, a question answered). Read the listing carefully; the actual work is what matters.

Do I need a PhD to be hired as a remote ML engineer? For most applied and MLOps roles, no. A strong portfolio of shipped work matters far more than credentials. For research-adjacent roles at foundation model labs, a PhD or equivalent research track record is usually expected, though exceptions exist. For everyone else, it's judgement, systems thinking, and evidence of having actually shipped a model that win the interview.

How much infrastructure do I need to know? Enough to take a model you've trained and run it in a production environment — containerisation, a cloud of choice, basic monitoring, an understanding of how latency and cost interact. You don't need to be a cloud architect. You do need to be able to deploy a model without needing a platform team to hand-hold you through it.

Why do MLOps roles pay so much more than applied ML roles? Because production ML is still genuinely hard, and the set of engineers who have shipped models at scale — with monitoring, rollbacks, and real SLAs — is much smaller than the set who have trained models. The pay gap follows the scarcity of production experience, not the sophistication of the models themselves.
