One in a hundred remote listings says 'anywhere'
Of 4,739 live remote listings, 1.1% state that the role is open worldwide and 3.5% name a region. 22.2% are United States only. The remaining 73.3% say 'remote' or name a single country, and on four of the thirteen boards the location line never says more than 'Remote'.
"Remote" answers where the desk is, not who may apply. The corpus shows how rarely the second question is answered in the location line: of 4,739 live listings the index classifies as remote, 52 (1.1%) say worldwide, anywhere or global, and 164 (3.5%) name a region such as Europe, EMEA, LATAM or APAC. 1,050 (22.2%) say the United States and nothing else. The remaining 3,473 (73.3%) say "remote" or name one country.
The scale is the location line, scored
RemNavi's Real Remote Score gives up to 25 points for location openness, read from the location line as the employer published it: 25 for worldwide or anywhere, 15 for a named region, 10 for a bare "remote" or a single named country, 8 for the United States only. The bands above are those scores, counted across the live index. A country list of two or more named countries appears in 207 listings (4.4%).
It depends on where the listing comes from
The share that states a worldwide or regional reach ranges from 16.6% on Jobicy to 0% on four boards, and the zeroes are not all the same thing. On VueJobs, 4DayWeek and We Work Remotely the feed carries a location line that reads "Remote" on every listing, so the line cannot say more; whatever the employer wrote about eligibility sits in the text, where a candidate has to find it. Adzuna's listings name a city or a country on 97.3% of lines. Employer career pages behave differently again: on Greenhouse-hosted pages 40.8% are United States only and 58.6% name a single country or city; on Ashby-hosted pages 17.7% are United States only and 5.8% state a region or worldwide. Himalayas carries the highest United States-only share, 57.3%.
Sources with fewer than 50 live remote listings are shown as counts: Working Nomads 39 listings, of which 4 say worldwide and 11 name a region; Remotive 8, of which 4 say worldwide; Lever 1.
Hybrid listings do not say "anywhere" at all
Of 1,256 live hybrid listings, none states a worldwide reach, 20 (1.6%) name a region, 156 (12.4%) are United States only and 1,080 (86.0%) name one country or city. For hybrid roles the location line is the office, which is what one would expect; the number is here for completeness.
What this means for a candidate
A listing that says "Remote" without a country is not a listing open to everyone; it is a listing that has not said. On the four boards where the location line is always "Remote", read the body for the eligibility sentence before applying. Where a region or "worldwide" is stated, the RRS location component shows 15 or 25 on the listing page.
Method and limits
Basis: live listings (posted within 30 days) on 19 October 2026, classified remote, n = 4,739; the band is the RRS location component as computed by the scorer for every listing page, read from the location line. Limits: the location line is a feed property on some boards (always "Remote" on VueJobs, 4DayWeek and We Work Remotely), so a zero there measures the feed, not the employer; eligibility stated only in the description text is not counted in the band, which understates openness for those boards; band 10 cannot distinguish "remote, no country given" from "one named country". Rates shown only where n is at least 50 per source. First read of the same facet on 15 October (n = 3,858): 0.9%, 2.5%, 20.3%, 76.3%. Source table archived with this story.
